ABOUT THE PROJECT

Striving for Good Governance:
Civil Society Strengthening and Youth Empowerment

The Center for International and European Studies (CIES) at Kadir Has University has launched a new project entitled “Striving for Good Governance: Civil Society Strengthening and Youth Empowerment” with the support of the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands under the Matra Program.

Striving for Good Governance” is a timely initiative of the CIES.  It is in line with the overall mission of the Center in the sense that it includes issues such as regional cooperation, global governance, good governance, civic engagement and youth engagement. Moreover, it supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015.

The project aims to strengthen the capacity of civil society based on the premise that a strong civil society is an essential pillar of democracy. It is unthinkable to attain democracy without good governance that requires the participation of all actors.

The project will result in two significant outcomes: The first is a Civil Society Organization (CSO) needs and assessment report based on a high level roundtable discussion and workshops. Needs assessment will be conducted to identify the most urgent priority needs. The second will focus on a range of capacity-building activities. Capacity-building will equip CSOs to ensure effective participation and enhance good governance. An NGO "Clinique" will be established to increase the knowledge and awareness of NGOs on most urgent needs to strengthen participatory democracy.

The project is a combination of a set of activities, trainings, initiatives and platforms grouped under six titles: Imagining a Better Future, CSO Clinique, Specialized Trainings, Youth Taking Initiative, Communicating Good Governance and Stakeholder Platforms. The overall aim is to improve CSOs’ capacities, skills and participation within the umbrella of good governance. It has a multiplier effect through its focus on youth who will in turn become experts in CSOs and will eventually assume their role as watchdog, as advocate and as mobiliser.

The project activities run from 31 December 2017 till 31 December 2018.

Mission

The revival of populism, authoritarianism and anti-globalism are the new trends whereby civil society groups face new challenges. Looking through the lenses of good governance, this time, will pave the way for augmentation of the relations among youth, civil society and academia thanks to all capacity-building trainings for CSOs and youth, needs assessment workshop for civil society, stakeholder platforms, press conferences and content creation on social media.
